CHAPTER SIXTEEN
After delivering two more gas cans to Jake, and then dropping off the one remaining full can to the maintenance garage, Ezra checked the inside temperature.
âItâs come up five degrees. Thatâs good, but not good enough. Iâd like to give the heater until tomorrow before trying to start the plow,â he said to Ron who had been following him closely, almost too closely.
Even though it was 4:00 pm and it was still early in the day, the winter night had descended turning the unlit parking lot into a gloomy, shadow-filled darkness.
They parked the snowmobile back behind the Damn Inn and securing its cover, the two weary men went to the bar for some coffee to warm their chilled bodies.
âI appreciate the tank of gas, Ezra, but honestly, I can afford to fill it myself,â Ron protested.
âThis has been official town business, and I feel it shouldnât cost you anything. In fact, I wanted to ask you about buying one of the sleds. Iâm seeing the advantage of having one of those things to get around on at a time like this.â
âIâll ask Murphyâs family, but I doubt they will want to keep his machine, so consider it yours.â Ron mulled over whether he should ask his boss first, or just give the sled away, saying it was lost in an accident. These people had been really nice to him, and now that his mission was complete, he wanted to leave them alone and go home to his empty house. There never was a wife waiting for himâthat lie was just part of his cover story, as his job didnât leave room for relationships. But the empty house was his refuge, a place to destress. He knew deep inside he would never retire, never be allowed to retire.
Back in his room, Major Ron Mesic retrieved the sat phone from its hiding place underneath his bulky sweaters and turned it on.
âReport.â His bossâs voice was as cold and heartless as ever.
âMission complete; requesting extraction.â His gaze rested on the bottle of bourbon sitting on the dresser, a clean glass waiting to be filled.
âDenied. Continue with observation and shake it up a bit.â The line went dead.
âShit,â he muttered and even though it wasnât 5:00 pm yet, he poured a finger of the amber liquid and downed it in one swallow.
